Almayate, Vélez-Málaga
Infant and primary school designed by Santos Arquitectos in Almayate, a district of the municipality of Vélez-Málaga in the Axarquía comarca. The building addresses the educational needs of a growing area, combining pedagogical functionality with a Mediterranean architectural character adapted to the rural setting of the locality.
The school programme includes infant and primary classrooms, a library, a multipurpose room, a canteen, a gymnasium and three playgrounds differentiated by age group. The two-storey layout clearly organises the uses, with the highest-footfall spaces on the ground floor and primary classrooms on the upper floor, accessed via stairs and a ramp to guarantee universal accessibility.
The main façade, facing north, adopts a sober and representative language that identifies the building as a public facility. The exterior spaces — courtyards, covered walkways and play areas — are designed to encourage physical activity and outdoor play throughout the year, with protection from direct solar exposure during the summer months.
